The second part uses the word
WHILE.
While is used when you start the sentence talking about the important even (in present simple ) and then you say what was happening during that time (past continuous).
Example:
1 ) I was running when a rabbit crossed (se cruzó) in front of me.
2 )A rabbit crossed in front of me while
I was running.
